The sample represents a population of 204,002 establishments. The overall response rate to the survey was 69 percent. By measuring the number of vacant positions for which employers are hiring, the Washington Job Vacancy Survey provides valuable insights into labor market conditions in our state. Survey results show not only the number of vacant positions, but also a number of job characteristics to reveal employers’ immediate workforce needs. What occupational groups are seeing the most openings? Healthcare practitioners and technical occupations accounted for 11 percent of vacancies in April 2006, more than any other occupational group. How did vacancies vary across industries? With an estimated 14,937 job openings, health care had nearly twice as many openings as any other industry in April 2006. Eighteen percent of vacancies statewide came from the healthcare and social assistance industry. The industry garnered the 3rd highest median wage ($15.38) and 2nd highest percentage requiring above a license/certification for vacant positions. The healthcare industry also had the most vacancies in the spring survey.
